JOSEPH MATTS passed away Friday, April 21, 2017. He was 89 years old. He was the son of Joseph and Pauline Matts and the brother of the late Mary Lou Smerglia. He was born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he graduated from South High School. After graduation, he enlisted and served in the Navy. Following his discharge, he graduated from Fenn College of Engineering (now Cleveland State University College of Engineering). During this time, he met his wife and began his family. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Mary Ellen (nee Vitz) and his five children, Constance Matts (Donald Stuart), Victoria Beach, Joan Olszko (Paul), Mary Jane Matts (Ralph Slifcak), and Joseph Matts (Eleni Pelecanos-Matts). He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He began his career at HWH Architects Engineers Planners Inc in 1949 where he worked for 66 years, rising to the positions of President and Chairman. At HWH, Joseph led design teams that completed thousands of engineering projects for large manufacturing facilities in 32 different countries, and was greatly respected by both his co-workers and clients. Throughout his career, he continuously pursued the betterment of all he touched and all those with whom he worked. He continued to advise HWH in his retirement and was a weekly presence at his office until his recent hospitalization. Joseph was a long-time member and fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Joseph was a 56-year resident of Independence, Ohio where he designed and built three beautiful homes for his family and his parents. He enjoyed golfing and had a great appreciation for athletes of all sports. Mostly, however, he followed the athletic and academic pursuits of his grandchildren with great interest and enthusiasm. He will always be remembered for his work ethic, his generosity, and his dedication to family. A memorial service will be held at Brecksville United Methodist Church on Saturday May 6th at 10:00 am. A private burial service has been held by the family.
