LEONARD G. PAPPAS age 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 28. Preceded in death by beloved wife Effie, Len was born on August 29, 1920 in Mansfield, Ohio to a Greek immigrant father, John Pananakis (changed to Pappas on Ellis Island) and mother Florence. He leaves behind four children; Karen Morabito (Pete), Leonard, Ellen Daniels (Tom) and David as well as five grandsons; Jim Morabito (Srividya), Joe Morabito (Shannon), Adam Daniels, Alec Daniels and Brandon Pappas, and three great-grandsons; Nicky, Alex and Jayden; Len was also a dear uncle to Joy DelGiudice (Tony), Jay Vamis (Cathy), Greg Vamis and Andy Vamis (Kelly). A child of the Depression, Len worked hard to excel in school and in his career as a research chemist. A graduate of East High, he accepted a full scholarship to Harvard. He served in the Army as first lieutenant during World War II. He married Effie in 1945 during his enlistment and received a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude at Western Reserve University and was a member of the honorary fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa. He also earned a master’s degree in chemistry and completed work toward a doctorate degree at Western Reserve. He worked for over 30 years as a research chemist for B.F. Goodrich at the research center in Brecksville where he resided for 60 years. He was active in the community; bowling in several leagues, coaching baseball, teaching Sunday school and volunteering. During retirement, he taught chemistry to nursing students at several local universities and attended law classes at Cleveland State with his wife, Effie. A dedicated scientist, he was intrigued by the concept of DNA and presented several lectures. Len and Effie traveled extensively, including to China and Russia as part of visiting scientist programs and enjoyed their several trips to Greece. Len was very proud to be an Army veteran and was honored to be part of the Brecksville Memorial Day Parade with the American Legion in 2015. His gentle manner and generous spirit will be missed by many. Family will receive friends at NOSEK-McCREERY FUNERAL HOME, 8150 BRECKSVILLE RD., BRECKSVILLE, OHIO 44141 on Thursday, August 4, from 5 to 8 pm, with Trisagion at 6 pm. Len’s Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul Orthodox Church, 4548 Wallings Rd, North Royalton on August 5 at 11:00 am. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH) Interment Brecksville Cemetery.
